How to Care for Permanent Makeup After the Procedure

After your permanent makeup appointment, what you do during the healing process matters just as much as the procedure itself.

At Simone Facial Beauty, I always tell my clients the same thing:

The way you care for your permanent brows (or lips) in the next 7–14 days will directly affect your final results.

The good news is that aftercare is actually very simple — but it does require attention.

Here’s exactly what I want my clients to understand.

The Most Important Rule: Keep Them Clean and Untouched

If you remember only one thing, let it be this:

Keep them clean. Don’t touch them.

Your skin is essentially an open wound after the procedure. That means anything that touches the area can affect how it heals.

This includes:

  • Makeup

  • Sweat

  • Dust

  • Dirty hands

  • Skincare products

At Simone Facial Beauty, I always emphasize washing the area twice a day with water and gentle soap (quickly, no over-washing).

Everything else — avoiding makeup, avoiding sweat, being careful — all comes from this one idea:

👉 Protect the healing skin.

The #1 Mistake That Can Ruin Your Results

The biggest mistake I see?

Picking.

Almost every client is tempted at some point when the skin starts to flake.

But picking does two things:

  • It pulls pigment out of the skin, which can lead to uneven or patchy results

  • It can cause scarring or tissue damage

And this isn’t just about permanent makeup — this is true for any healing skin.

I always tell my clients:

Let your skin do its job. Don’t interfere with the process.

Avoid Moisture (Yes, Even the Gym)

Another key part of aftercare is avoiding excess moisture.

This includes:

  • Sweating (workouts, hot yoga)

  • Steam (hot showers, saunas)

  • Pools

  • Excess humidity

Too much moisture can affect how the pigment settles into the skin.

This is why I usually recommend taking a short break from intense workouts — even if it’s just for a few days.

Use the Ointment (But Don’t Overdo It)

After your procedure, I provide an ointment to support healing.

Used correctly, it helps:

  • Protect the skin

  • Keep the area comfortable

  • Support even healing

But more is not better.

A very small amount (about a rice grain size) is enough.

What Most Clients Panic About (But Shouldn’t)

Almost every client goes through this moment:

“My brows disappeared.”

This is called the ghosting phase, and it’s completely normal.

During healing:

  • The colour can appear darker at first

  • Then it flakes

  • Then it looks like it faded or disappeared

This is temporary.

The pigment is still there — it just takes time to resurface and settle properly in the skin.

I always explain this during the appointment, but I still get messages from clients worried when it happens 💔

And every time, the answer is the same:

Trust the process. You’ll enjoy so many benefits after everything is healed.

Why Some Clients Heal Better Than Others

One thing I’ve noticed over time is very clear:

The best results come from clients who follow instructions.

Clients who don’t follow pre-care and aftercare guidelines — like:

  • Drinking alcohol or caffeine before the procedure

  • Sweating too soon

  • Not keeping the area clean

often heal:

  • lighter

  • uneven

  • less defined

Permanent makeup is not just what happens in the studio — it’s also what happens after you leave.

My Approach to Aftercare (And Why I Keep It Simple)

I always try to make aftercare feel simple and manageable, not overwhelming.

When clients leave, I:

  • Explain everything clearly in person

  • Send written instructions by text

  • Walk them through the healing stages

But at the end of the day, everything comes back to this:

👉 Keep them clean and don’t touch them

If you follow that, most of the other rules naturally fall into place.

The Real Goal of Aftercare

Aftercare isn’t about perfection — it’s about protecting your results.

When done properly, it allows:

  • the pigment to settle evenly

  • the skin to heal properly

  • the final result to look soft, natural, and balanced

And that’s always the goal at Simone Facial Beauty.
